Bespoke Finca Architecture in Galilea, Mallorca

jle arquitectos was entrusted with the task of transforming an old ruin in the mountains into a finca for a four-person family. This exceptional finca in the mountains of Galilea, Mallorca, masterfully embodies the fusion of traditional construction with contemporary architecture. Through careful integration into the site’s topography and a respectful approach to the Genius Loci, a unique ensemble of historical and modern elements emerges. The harmonious incorporation of the structures into the terraced landscape creates a natural living experience with breathtaking views of the Mediterranean.

Integration into the Landscape
The hillside location was aesthetically embraced through precisely planned terraces with traditional bancales made of local natural stone. This allows the finca to blend seamlessly into the Mallorcan cultural landscape while offering spectacular views of the Mediterranean. The landscape design, featuring Mediterranean plants, palm trees, and fruit trees, enhances the authenticity of the place. The careful selection of native vegetation reduces maintenance efforts and promotes ecological sustainability.

Architecture and Materiality
The building ensemble consists of multiple volumes connected through a clear architectural language. The natural stone masonry, sourced locally, pays homage to traditional Mallorcan construction, while precisely placed shadow gaps create a sense of modern lightness. The fine lime and plaster surfaces inside lend a tactile quality to the spaces, while large openings with dark wooden shutters create an ever-changing interplay of light and shadow.

The load-bearing walls consist of monolithic masonry with integrated thermal insulation, while delicate steel supports have been strategically used to enable expansive glazing. The roof construction combines traditional wooden beam ceilings with modern insulation and waterproofing systems for optimal energy efficiency. The handcrafted wooden elements, including shutters and doors, were custom-made, giving the house an authentic and refined aesthetic.

Interior Design and Technical Features
The interior follows a concept of reduced yet warm materiality. Large-format natural stone tiles extend seamlessly into the bathroom vanities, while solid wooden planks in the living areas create a cozy atmosphere. A lightweight steel staircase with a delicate mesh railing connects the different levels and emphasizes the building’s vertical openness. Precisely placed shadow gaps and concealed LED lighting systems generate an intriguing interaction between light and materials.

Technically, the finca is equipped to the highest standards. Underfloor heating with a heat pump system ensures efficient climate control, while a central KNX system automates lighting, shading, and security technology. The ventilation system provides a healthy indoor climate through controlled ventilation with heat recovery. A smart home integration allows for the remote control of all building technologies via mobile devices.

Outdoor Areas and Sustainability
The porche and a custom-designed pergola made of steel and reed offer sheltered outdoor spaces with natural shading. The infinity pool seamlessly integrates with the terraced landscape, visually connecting the property to the surrounding nature. A separate guest area with its own lounge, BBQ zone, and garage complements the concept of a flexible and functional living space.

Water management is handled through a rainwater harvesting system with underground cisterns for garden irrigation. A photovoltaic system with battery storage ensures self-sufficient energy supply, while the use of natural building materials such as lime plaster, clay-based paints, and untreated wood contributes to sustainability. The finca’s technical equipment meets the highest energy efficiency standards and is designed for resource-conscious use.

Conclusion
This finca exemplifies the successful synthesis of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design. The sustainable choice of materials, integration into the topography, and artisanal precision grant the project a distinctive identity and lasting value. Through intelligent technical expansion, innovative building technology, and the use of high-quality materials, a future-oriented architectural concept with maximum living comfort has been realized. The combination of exquisite craftsmanship and state-of-the-art technology makes this finca a unique architectural masterpiece with a clear distinctive character in the region.
