Majorcan Ibiza style

Ibiza served as the inspiration for this renovation and extension project in Cala Figuera, Mallorca, named “1303.” It exemplifies the seamless integration of Ibizan style with modern design elements along the Majorcan coast. Ibiza on Mallorca. In addition to its aesthetics, the project also emphasises legal compliance and practical features such as a covered terrace (porche) and sun protection using shutters.

The architectural transformation of “1303” captures the essence of Ibizan style and incorporates its signature elements to create a visually striking exterior. The traditional whitewashed walls, characteristic of the island’s architecture, have been carefully restored and enhanced, giving the house a fresh and welcoming appearance. The renovation respects the requirements of legal compliance, ensuring adherence to local regulations and building codes while preserving the building’s original charm.

A remarkable addition to the project is the veranda, which extends the living space outdoors. This covered area offers a shaded retreat where residents can relax and enjoy the Mediterranean climate. Designed to integrate seamlessly with the existing architecture, the veranda uses natural materials and complements the overall aesthetic of the property.

Sun protection is a key design aspect of “1303.” To ensure comfort and shield interiors from excessive sunlight, adjustable shutters have been installed throughout the property. Strategically positioned, these shutters allow for flexible control of the amount of natural light and heat entering the space. Not only do they provide effective sun protection, but they also enhance the visual appeal of the facade by adding depth and texture to the overall design.

Beyond their functional benefits, the shutters bring a touch of elegance and authenticity to the interiors. When closed, they create a cozy and intimate ambiance by diffusing soft, filtered light through the slats. When open, they provide panoramic views and connect the interior with the surrounding landscape.

Modern Mediterranean – Interiors with Clarity and Texture

The interior design of “1303” harmoniously blends traditional and contemporary elements. Neutral tones dominate the color palette, reinforcing a sense of tranquility while allowing the furnishings and architectural features to stand out. Natural textures—stone, wood, and woven materials—have been thoughtfully integrated, adding warmth and tactile appeal to the living spaces.

A central design element is the deliberate spaciousness of the rooms: large-format windows, seamless transitions between indoor and outdoor areas, and a carefully considered lighting concept create openness and depth. Bathrooms, for example, use frameless glazing to connect directly to nature—offering a quiet luxury that permeates the entire house.

Courtyards, Light, and Landscape

One of the highlights is the Mediterranean courtyard with integrated seating and lush planting. This semi-private outdoor space not only creates a green oasis of calm but also serves as a climatic buffer within the building’s core. Deliberately placed vegetation—including palms, strelitzia, and banana plants—is artfully illuminated after dark, lending the outdoor area a theatrical presence.

The Pool Deck – A Stage for Light

At the heart of the exterior layout lies the expansive pool deck with an inset pool, becoming a stage for the interplay of light and material. The consistent use of natural stone-look flooring reflects the soft ambient light, absorbing both the morning’s cool clarity and the evening’s warm tones. The symmetrical arrangement of the pool reinforces the calm and order of the overall composition, while lounge and dining zones blend fluidly into the porches.

Materiality and Attention to Detail

The materials used reflect a restrained yet high-quality selection: pigmented plaster, limestone-like floor tiles in 60×60 cm format, oak wood, wickerwork, and handcrafted lighting all contribute to an atmosphere of lightness and craftsmanship. This combination results in a cohesive architectural aesthetic that subtly interprets the regional context without veering into nostalgia.

Functional Clarity and Poetic Simplicity

Project “1303” expresses an architectural philosophy that balances clarity with emotion. The transitions between indoors and outdoors are fluid; the rooms are open but never ostentatious. The architecture structures without overpowering. The interplay of natural light, tactile surfaces, and a well-considered spatial flow creates a quiet poetry that respects and reinterprets the genius loci.

Conclusion

As an architectural renovation, “1303” successfully marries the aesthetics of Ibizan style with the practical demands of legal compliance, the integration of windbreaks, and sun protection through the use of shutters. The result is a captivating and functional space that pays homage to the island’s architectural heritage while delivering a contemporary design sensibility.

Project 1303 stands as a prime example of architecture distilled to its essence, cultivated in detail, and naturally convincing as a whole.
