1822 – Architecture with conviction and ambition

With Project 1822, a building has emerged that demonstrates independence in multiple ways. In close collaboration with a dedicated client, a house was developed that serves not only as a private residence, but also as a show house and a platform for high-end construction and fit-out companies from Germany and across Europe.

In every project, our office aims to develop solutions with a distinct identity—independent of short-lived trends or external prescriptions. For us, architecture grows out of the specific situation: the site, the task, the needs. In this project as well, the design process was individual and consistently aligned with the particularities of the commission. We created the architectural concept and, based on the structural parameters, developed the material strategy together with the client—openly, thoughtfully, and with a clear design goal.

The client consciously chose to take new paths. He was open to impulses and willing to be guided by the character of the place and by spatial ideas. This mindset was decisive for the quality of the project. The joint search for solutions resulted in a house that takes the conditions of the plot seriously—and carries them forward in design terms.

The architecture turns the sloping site into an opportunity: across several levels, the house unfolds with fluid transitions between inside and outside. The infinity pool, slightly elevated above the valley, emphasizes the expansive view and intensifies the sense of space. The focus was never on spectacle, but on how function, setting, and atmosphere can be meaningfully brought together.

The material palette is clear and deliberate. On the upper and roof levels, load-bearing CLT elements (cross-laminated timber) are used—a contemporary timber construction approach that is durable, sustainable, and technically precise. The interior design follows the same restrained language: reduced detailing, functional solutions, and high-quality yet robust materials.

At the heart of the house is the open living and dining area spanning two levels. Here, a special spatial feature was planned—unfortunately not realized: a walkable steel net, lightly suspended above the room, intended both as a retreat and as a distinctive design accent.

Three large, electrically operable sliding elements, each six meters high, were developed only during the construction process. They exemplify the openness with which this project was handled—decisions were not made prematurely, but adjusted and refined based on real progress on site.

The creative lead for the interior fit-out—furniture and surfaces—lay with the client himself, who implemented it according to his personal taste. Alongside quality, economic efficiency also played an important role. Through forward-looking planning, smart material choices, and technical efficiency, the budget could be deployed purposefully while keeping a close eye on the cost structure.

Sustainability of 1822 was not an afterthought, but part of the concept from the start. Regional materials, an energy-efficient building envelope, and modern smart-home technologies enable resource-conscious operation—ecologically sound, without sacrificing comfort.

Technically, the building is also state of the art. It combines modern building services, digital control systems, and a networked infrastructure with carefully executed craft details. Collaboration with specialized companies across different trades demonstrated what is possible when planning and execution are well aligned.

1822 is neither a prototype nor a repetition. It stands for an attitude: the pursuit of clear design, functional thinking, and independent solutions. It shows that clients who embrace an open design process can create—together with the planning team—something that goes beyond the familiar.

With this project, we make an architectural statement that embodies singularity in several respects. In close collaboration with a visionary client, a building was created that functions as a show house and platform for the most innovative and highest-quality specialist firms in Germany and Europe. The client deliberately sought master craftspeople and brands that set benchmarks in their respective fields—with the clear ambition of uniting craftsmanship, technological innovation, and aesthetic brilliance in a unique architectural body.

As a platform for top-tier quality, it brings together our office’s design capabilities with the craftsmanship excellence of selected partners—an environment that rethinks value creation and shows how architecture, technology, and craft can produce something exceptional in concert.

Conclusion
The project demonstrates how a house can be created through careful planning, skilled craftsmanship, and clear architectural decisions. It exemplifies our way of working: site-specific, independent in design, and open in process.
